What is a Canadian resume?

A Canadian resume is a one- to two-page, reverse-chronological summary of your skills, work history and measurable achievements. It contains no photo, date of birth, marital status or Social Insurance Number, lists only your city and province, uses Canadian spelling, and is tailored to each job posting with keywords an ATS can read.

The samples below follow these conventions across healthcare, technology, engineering, aviation and the skilled trades. Use them as a guide for structure and wording, and replace every detail with your own verified experience.

Canadian resume format: what to include

Include

  • Contact details: name, phone, professional email, city and province, LinkedIn if current.
  • Professional summary: two to three lines aimed at the target job.
  • Experience in reverse-chronological order with employer, title, location and dates.
  • Quantified achievements: numbers, percentages, volumes and results.
  • Skills and keywords that match the job posting.
  • Education and licences: include provincial registration, Red Seal or professional designations where they apply.
  • Canadian spelling (colour, centre, licence) and one consistent date format.

Length and layout

  • One to two pages is the standard for most roles.
  • Single column, standard headings and a plain, readable font work best with ATS software.
  • Resume vs CV: a resume is used for most jobs; a CV (longer, with publications and research) is typically used for academic, research and some medical roles.
  • Cover letter: send one tailored to the role unless the posting says not to.
  • References: have them ready, but they do not need to appear on the page.

What to leave off a Canadian resume

  • Photo. The Ontario Human Rights Commission advises employers not to request photos on application forms because they can reveal details tied to protected grounds such as race, colour, sex or age.
  • Date of birth and age. The Commission says the only permitted question is whether the applicant is 18 or over; birth date should be requested only after a conditional offer.
  • Marital status. The Commission states that no questions about marital status are permitted on application forms.
  • Social Insurance Number. The Government of Canada says your SIN is only required after hiring and when you earn income, and not to use it as identification. A SIN may be requested after a conditional offer.
  • Full home address. City and province are enough.

Which resume type should you use?

Type Best for Notes
Reverse-chronological Most applicants with steady experience The default in Canada and the format ATS parses most reliably. All samples on this page use it.
Functional Career changers, gaps Groups skills over work history. Many recruiters distrust it, so use it sparingly.
Combination (hybrid) Skilled trades, technical roles, career pivots A skills summary followed by reverse-chronological history.
Academic CV Research, university and some medical roles Can run longer than two pages and lists publications, grants and teaching.

Where employer guidance differs

Canadian sources do not agree on everything. For file format, some employers say Word, others PDF; follow the posting, and if none is given, an ATS-friendly PDF with selectable text is a safe choice. For dates, either “Jan 2022 – Mar 2025” or “2022 – 2025” is acceptable, as long as you use one style throughout. For length, one page suits early careers and two pages suit senior or regulated professions.

ATS tips for Canadian applications

  • Use standard headings such as Experience, Education and Skills.
  • Mirror the exact wording of the job posting where it is true for you.
  • Save as a text-selectable PDF or Word file, as the employer requests.
  • Name the file clearly, for example FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf.
  • Avoid tables, text boxes, columns, icons and graphics for key content.
  • Do not put contact details in the header or footer area of a Word file.
  • Do not embed your resume as an image only; keep real text.
  • Do not invent skills or credentials to match keywords.
